The short answer is ANYTHING. I have friends who are ChEs who are into marketing, sales, and executive management in Fortune 100 companies. I am a ChE (BS degree “only”) and have done R&D, product development (computer memory), process development (nuclear waste management, radioisotope separation, fruit processing), designed and installed air and water pollution controls systems, improved operation of central utility plants (steam, chilled water, compressed air), maintenance supervisor, designed and installed plants to make new computer tape and printing plates, designed custom industrial wastewater processes, installed and upgraded safety systems in a major assembly line, designed several waste-to-energy plants and processes, designed and started distillation columns for a variety of organics, designed absorbers and adsorbers, developed gas-phase catalysts, designed and installed tank farms for acids, bases, organics, wastes, etc. There is a lot more, too. I have worked in nuclear power, food, beverage, consumer products, paper, and coatings industries. I’ve worked as an analytical process development chemist, a statistician, a plant manager.
