Why are Civil Engineers paid less than other Engineering fields?

They aren’t paid as much as mechanical or aerospace, but civil engineering isn’t that far off, like around $4,000 – $5,000 less!

Ive taken a year of civil engineering and I am just finding this out now, and it is making me want to leave and join a different major

I enjoy civil engineering, its active so far not too hard.
what should i do?

Don’t be too concerned with salaries early in your career, especially if you enjoy what you are doing. For CE’s the career path, taking your FE exam in your last semester of college is very important. You want to be in the path of becoming a Professional Engineer. You can take your PE Exam after you have had 4 years of experience. Once you are a PE, you will see a big bounce in your base salary. It is True that other engineering disciplines get a higher salary right out of school, but they tend to hit a ceiling somewhat early in their career.

The key again is getting professional licensure relatively early in your career. Also keep in mind (and this is the best kept secret) that as a civil engineer you will be employed all your life. Do not be too specialized in one area, have a broad based background – diversification is good, be flexible and don’t focus the money. Money will not bring you happiness – job satisfaction will!

One other pointer – become an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. It will serve you well.
