If a graduate is ranked first in the department but not in the school, is he/she called a valedictorian?
For example, a student who is ranked first among the graduates of civil engineering department and ranked second in the school.
No, the person is not a valedictorian. Yet, he/she may graduate Summa Cum Laude or receive recognition within the department. This happened to me before.
